Mullard Space Science Laboratory Profile
Mullard Space Science Laboratory Website
[profile] [contact details] [capabilities] [brochure]

MSSL is the largest and longest established Space Science research Laboratory in
the UK. MSSL’s staff and facilities are available to undertake commercial work in a
wide variety of space and other high-tech engineering disciplines.

For over 40 years, MSSL has been designing and building innovative scientific space
research instruments for more than 250 rocket and satellite missions.

MSSL has developed a strong track record of links with industry both in the UK and
internationally on both small and large scale ventures.

Our project management skills have been proven on many projects within tight
scheduling and funding constraints. Because all these capabilities are co-located,
MSSL is ideally placed to efficiently solve demanding engineering challenges,
particularly when high reliability systems are required. MSSL has lead many large
international satellite instrument development programmes.

Detectors developed & characterised include: CCDs, (operating from optical to X-ray
wavelengths), cryogenic systems with cooling to 10mK, electrostatic analysers and a
variety of imagers based on intensifiers and MCPs.

Electronic systems for both flight and ground applications, ranging from low noise
signal processing to on-board computers and power converters (including high
voltage), are designed, built and tested in house. Low power and high packing
densities (often using FPGAs) are specialities.

Mechanical and thermal design, fabrication and integration is undertaken in-house,
using innovative materials and a wide range of processes such as spark erosion
and laser machining. Advanced CAE systems are used for static and dynamic 3D
structural and thermal analyses.

Software is developed for modelling & simulation; fault tolerant, real time instrument
control, data collection, processing, compression & display. Applications include
autonomous on-board systems and spacecraft ground test equipment.

Facilities include an ISO class 5 clean room, thermal vacuum, vacuum bakeout &
vibration test systems.
